Rehabilitación postoperatoria

Knee Replacement

Mobility and pain relief after knee replacement

8–14
semanas de rehabilitación

¿Qué es esta operación?

In a total knee replacement, the worn joint is replaced with a metal alloy and polyethylene that mimic the natural joint surface. The procedure lasts about 1–2 hours and is most often performed for severe knee arthritis. With good aftercare, the new joint can last 15–25 years. Structured rehabilitation is crucial: the knee must be actively 're-programmed' after surgery so that muscles and the nervous system work harmoniously again.

¿Por qué es indispensable la rehabilitación?

  • Faster restoration of knee flexion (goal: 90°+)
  • Prevent and reverse quadriceps atrophy
  • Pain control without excessive medication
  • Normalise gait pattern
  • Minimise fall risk

Objetivos terapéuticos

  • 120°+ knee flexion for normal sitting
  • Full knee extension
  • Pain-free walking on flat ground
  • Two-legged stair climbing
  • Light sport (swimming, aqua-jogging, cycling)

¿Qué puede esperar?

1

Weeks 1–2: Early Recovery

Pain and swelling are strongest at this stage. Knee flexion is limited to 40–60°. Walking aids are necessary. Physiotherapy starts immediately after surgery with passive mobilisation.

2

Weeks 3–8: Restoring Mobility

Knee flexion improves gradually. Goal: 90° by week 6. Strengthening exercises begin. Most patients can walk with one stick or without aids. Cycling ergometer is cleared.

3

Weeks 9–14: Functional Rehabilitation

Stair climbing, squats, sport-specific training. Target: 120° knee flexion. Pain is minimal in daily life. Swimming and cycling to strengthen the cardiovascular system.

Nuestro programa de tratamiento

1

Phase 1 — Weeks 1–4

  • Cryotherapy & oedema reduction
  • Passive knee flexion/extension
  • Isometric quadriceps exercises
  • Gait training
2

Phase 2 — Weeks 5–8

  • Assisted squats
  • Cycling ergometer (low resistance)
  • Proprioceptive exercises
  • Swimming allowed
3

Phase 3 — Weeks 9–14

  • Two-legged stair climbing
  • Light jogging (with medical clearance)
